Faith Lessons Series

Three DVD studies from the Faith Lessons series, led by renowned instructor and historian Ray Vander Laan, have been added to Presbytery’s Resource Center . This series was filmed on location in the Middle East .

Prophets & Kings – Journey back to the time of Jesus with this six-session DVD and 200-page discovery guide study. This set studies the Old Testament Hebrews’ choices of whom to serve and the consequences of their selections. Video segments run approx. 20 minutes.                      

Promised Land – This five-session DVD and 150+ page discovery guide study how the land of the Hebrew people shaped their story. Video segments run approx. 20 minutes.

Death and Resurrection of the Messiah – This study focuses on the last week of Jesus’ life, his death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit’s visit on Pentecost. A DVD and participant’s guide. Each video session is 15-20 minutes, followed by discussion and study. Led by Ray Vander Laan.

These studies join Life & Ministry of the Messiah, also from Faith Lessons, in the resource center. This eight-session DVD and 200+ page discovery guide study let you understand how the events of Jesus’ day impacted his life, ministry and communication. Video segments run approx. 20 minutes.

Home Grown: Essentials for Christian Parenting – A seven-session study for parents to get together and share joys and challenges while looking for ways to nurture faith in their children. Includes a Q&A handbook, DVD and study guide.

Promotion of Social Righteousness by Cynthia Rigby – The fifth installment of the Great Ends of the Church series asserts that the work of Christians is not about what they are called to do, but about who they are called to be, as disciples of Jesus Christ.

That’s What My Mother Taught Me by Herb Mather – Interviews with over a hundred people identified as generous givers are woven together to describe ways giving patterns develop in congregations 

Stop Bullying! – A DVD presentation of Mark Brown giving students concrete steps they can take to respond to bullying that they witness or experience. 20 minutes.

Neighbor by Ben Daniel – A book on illegal immigration. The author puts a human face on the debate and encourages Christians to meet the migrants as friends.

Razing Hell by Sharon L. Baker – A rethinking of the traditional views of hell.

Available to Your Church

What does being Presbyterian mean? What are our core beliefs and which of these do we share with other Christians? Who was John Calvin?

To help your congregation answer questions like these and learn more about the Presbyterian denomination, the Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery Resource Center has assembled a small display of books and videos that your church may borrow. Display the resources at your location for your members to use, or borrow the resources to assist with a class or group study at your church.

Presbyterians: A Spiritual Journey

A beautifully photographed book that is the result of the author’s journeys around the country, interviewing Presbyterians about their work, their lives and their faith.

Presbyterians: Part I: The People         

            Presbyterian Church (USA)     1990 

Explores what it means to be Presbyterian. Begins with the Presbyterians as people, people who believe in God, people who struggle to be faithful to God and the witness of Christ by the way they live in the world. The story in this film is told by Presbyterians through their spontaneous testimony to the importance of faith in their lives, to the sovereignty of God over their lives. 28 minutes. VHS

Presbyterians: Part II: History and Tradition

This video outlines the history of the Presbyterian Church USA, and is divided into seven segments: Prologue; The Early Church; Reformation; Rebellion; Birth of a Nation; One Nation for Christ; Challenge. Segments may be studied individually or combined. The Study guide offers ideas about how to do this. 55 minutes. VHS

Presbyterians: Part III: Belief and Doctrine

Leadership and Church Transformation Resources Available for Loan

Missional Church by Darrell Guder. Six noted missiologists – Lois Barrett, Inagrace T. Dietterich, Darrell L. Guder, George R. Hunsberger, Alan J. Roxburgh, and Craig Van Gelder – issue a challenge to the church to recover itss missional call and examine today’s secular culture and the church’s loss of dominance in contemporary society.

The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller. A message of hope and salvation, using one of the Jesus’ best-known p arables.

Who Stole My Church? by Gordon MacDonald. A fictional story about a true issue: many church members in their 70s, 60s and 50s are bewildered by praise bands and PowerPoint presentations and feel their church has been hijacked by church growth movements. MacDonald’s story makes the point that change is positive for a congregation.  

The Volunteer Revolution by Bill Hybels. Stories of how volunteering and serving has changed lives and delivered the satisfaction that people search for.

Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley. A book on leadership and the five characteristics needed for tomorrow’s leaders: courage, competence, character, clarity and coachability.

The Externally Focused Church by Rick Rusaw & Eric Swanson. This book tells how your church can become externally focused. Externally focused churches are quick to partner with community agencies, open to building new relationships, and flood their neighborhoods with compassion.
