Upper Ohio Valley
Presbytery / Malawi Banner Although
the Ohio River Valley and Malawi are worlds apart, this banner shows how the
distance is bridged. Malawi is mountainous with minimal vegetation,
and the Ohio River Valley has rolling hills and much vegetation.
Malawi is an agrarian culture; Ohio/West Virginia have factories and power
plants along the river. Water
is important both to maintain life, and technologically, to give new life.
The waters of the Ohio river and Lake Malawi do not join, they are shown to do
so on this art piece because of water representing baptism which unites both
people. Growing out of baptism is the sacrament of communion,
depicted by the tree/vine entwined to represent unity. The people of two very different places are brought together through their Presbyterian faith (the logo) and in sharing of sacramental life.
(This
banner was first displayed to the Presbytery at the September, 2010 Meeting at
First Presbyterian Church, St. Clairsville, Ohio. |
